Spring 2007

Welcome to Spring 2007.  The Department of Administration of Justice is in the midst of many exciting changes this semester.  We have recently moved into the newly-renovated Arthell Kelley Hall located at the front of campus.  The relocation allows all faculty (AJ and Forensic Science) to be housed together.  This makes for a wonderful and productive working relationship among the faculty as well as added convenience for our students.  The building is now home for AJ departmental offices, a mock trial courtroom and numerous forensic science laboratories.  We welcome you all to come for a tour.  A ribbon cutting ceremony and open house will be held later in the semester.

The number of AJ majors continues to rise.  Our students continue to find gainful employment with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.  Our alums hold positions at the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service as well as a host of state and local law enforcement agencies and crime laboratories. In addition, many of our students are employed by the private sector.  We also have number of our best and brightest who have been accepted to graduate programs and law schools across the country.  Clearly, Administration of Justice continues to be an exciting field with great opportunities for those who are willing to meet the challenge.

We would like to extend a special welcome to Kathy Sones who joins us this semester as an adjunct faculty member.  Ms. Sones is an Assistant District Attorney in the Fifteenth  Circuit Court District and as such brings an extensive amount of legal expertise to the classroom.  The Department is extremely grateful for the continued service of our adjunct faculty members who include Judge Keith Starrett, Judge Michael McPhail, the Honorable Thomas Schwartz, Honorable James Howell, Ms. Marian Duggan, Mr. Harley M. Schinker, and Mr. Randy Johnson.

The Department will also be hosting two nationally-renowned speakers this semester.  Mr. Greg McAleese will be speaking to AJ classes and at our Brown Bag Luncheon on  Tuesday, February 13, 2007.  Mr. McAleese is the founder of Crimestoppers which is now present in all states and several foreign countries.  Mr. Jon Byrd, a Forensic Criminalist with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, will be lecturing on Ethics and Mistakes in Forensic Science.  Mr. Byrd’s presentation will be held on Monday, February 5, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. in the Polymer Science Research Center, Room 101.  We extend a warm welcome to our speakers.

The Department wishes to sincerely thank The Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, Inc. and Mr. John Kelso and Alan Hoyt for their generosity.  The Society selected the Department of Administration of Justice to receive one of eight scholarships awarded from the J. Edgar Hoover Memorial Scholarship Program for 2006.  The donation will be used to establish a scholarship fund for AJ students.  Such donations make it possible for the Department to offer financial support and incentives for our students.

We hope you have a wonderful Spring semester and hope you will all come visit the new building soon.
